No prices will be given for guessing what will happen if a car battery dies. The car will not work and the driver will be stuck wherever they are until they get help. It is therefore important for one to be able to tell if a car battery is dead so that they can make the necessary changes to avoid inconveniences. The first tell tale sign of a dead car battery is the failing of the car to respond when the driver puts the ignition key in and then turns it. Another sign could be a clicking sound usually heard when the cylinoid engages. Another way of knowing the battery is dead is if one turns on their headlights and they do not light up. When a car battery dies, one has the options of either charging, changing the battery or jumpstarting it. However, one can only jumpstart the battery if it has a voltage of 11 volts, anything below that means they have to change it. If one decides to change their car battery they will have to open the hood of their car. Upon opening the car's hood one will be met by things such as wires, engine blocks, rubber hoses, metal tubes which may make it slightly difficult for one to locate the battery.

Then instrument used for charging a battery is called a charger. The charger has two cables; red and black. The first step is to connect the black cable to the negative and the red to the battery's positive terminal. If one's battery has a charge indicator has a "green eye" they should charge the battery until the indicator turns green. If it does not have the indicator one should charge it for thirty minutes then check its voltage; 12.6 volts is as sign of full charge. The next step one should take is to use a Voltmeter to test their charging system. This should be done as the car is running. One should place their multimeter upon a voltage range (DC) greater than 14 volts and then touch their probes to the terminals of the battery. For effective charging one should use voltage of about 14.0 to 14.5. A millimeter's part for measuring current can be used to check if there is any leakage in the current which is causing discharges in the battery. There are times when the current can be insufficient for the meter's highest range. If the current is below 1 Ampere one can switch their meter down to its matching range.

What's mysterious to you is that you've had the battery for under two years with many more years left in its life cycle.

No worries, you can avoid by a new battery by recharging your dead one. Yes, the battery that has given up the ghost will soon be live and kicking again if you follow my recharging steps:

Get Prepared - To recharge your battery, you'll need access to several tools, many of which you may already have. If you don't have a battery recharger, then borrow one from a friend. Some of the auto parts stores have one that they can lend to you too. Along with the battery charger you'll need a wrench or pliers, safety goggles, gloves, and a battery cleaner. A little tip for you: oftentimes corrosion is what causes batteries to die before their time.

Clean the Connections - You don't need to remove the battery from your car in order to recharge it. You will need to make sure that battery posts and terminals are free of corrosion; a wire brush will do as will a special battery cleaner you can pick up at the parts store.

Connect the Charger - Most batteries today are color coded meaning you can connect the black terminal with the negative clip and the red terminal with the positive clip. Check the battery terminal itself which will show a "+" symbol for positive and a "-" symbol for negative.

Let Her Rip - Once connected, you are ready to turn your battery charger on. Follow the gauge on the charger to know how long to keep it connected to your battery. When done, disconnect the charger and your once dead battery should be alive and kicking.

Always were the appropriate safety items (gloves and goggles) when working with a battery and make sure that you don't cross the connections which could damage the battery. If after taking these steps your battery won't hold a charge, then repeat it to see what happens. A battery that won't hold a charge is likely dead and will need replacing a step you can handle by paying a fresh visit to your favorite auto parts store.

Batteries, or dry cells are manufactured to supply steady and uninterrupted D.C power to different modern day gadgets that run with electrical energy. Batteries are generally lead-acid cells. Over 15 billion are produced every year and are sold worldwide. Many of these are alkaline-batteries which are discarded after being used for a single time. But there are also some which can be charged again and again after every use and are known as "rechargeable batteries". Jump Start Your Vehicle With a Easy Start Battery Charger

Equipment failure can be minimized through proper vehicle maintenance and care. But even with proper maintenance, car lights can accidentally be left on, or the radio left on for a long period of time, causing power loss. What should you do if you are caught in such a predicament? Keep the following pointers in mind.

1. DON'T PANIC....As with any incident the worst thing you can do is Panic.
2. If not already off the road, try to stay out of harms way.
3. Warn other drivers by using Reflective Safety Triangles or Emergency Lights (both of which are available in your Red Cross Emergency Safety Kit).
4. Check your battery by turning the ignition key to the Start Position. If you hear a rapid clicking sound, or the lights come on and then go dim, or no sound at all, check the battery connections.
5. To no avail, it is time to use your Easy-Start Battery Charger which can be located in your American Red Cross Basic Auto Safety Kit.
6. Remember gases emitting from the battery, so do not smoke or light a cigarette around the battery.
7. Do not attempt to push start your vehicle, besides this being a great danger to you and others, this could also damage your engine.
8. Avoid all contact with battery acid...it is very corrosive.
9. Do not disconnect the battery of a DISABLED vehicle.
10. Be certain the vehicle to be jumped and the assisting vehicle are not touching. Also be sure you are not touching both vehicles at the same time while charging.
11. Turn your Easy-Start Battery Charger to the "test" position, and insert the plug into the dead car's 12-volt/lighter receptacle.
12. Insert the other plug into the receptacle of the car with the good battery.
13. In the car with the dead battery turn the ignition key to the Off position. A test light will turn green and the charge light will turn red to indicate a good, solid connection.
14. Turn the Easy-Start Battery Charger switch to the "Charge" position.
15. Start the vehicle with the good battery and leave it running until it charges the dead battery.
16. Once the car with the dead battery is properly charged, do not shut off the vehicle until you reach your destination; and then immediately have the battery checked for proper voltage.

Always remember to Keep the Easy-Start Battery Charger out of the reach of children.
The Easy-Start Battery Charger is only designed for emergency purposes.

Is My Car Battery Faulty?

If your car's engine doesn't turn over, or does so slowly, it's likely that the battery is dead. If the cause of the flat battery is that you forgot to switch off the headlights, it's simply a matter of connecting a car battery charger to recharge the dead battery. It's more problematic if you have no obvious reason for the battery being flat.

Frequently, the reason for a dead battery with no obvious cause is either the battery is faulty or that it is not getting charged by means of the alternator. It may be that the alternator has a fault, or it may be that the belt driving the alternator is slipping.

A simple way to check that the alternator is charging the car battery is starting the engine and switching on the headlights (This works best if it's a least a little dark outside). With the engine ticking over at normal tickover revs, observe the point (wall, etc.) on which the headlights are shining. When the alternator is sucessfully charging the battery, the lights get a little brighter when pressing the accelerator and increasing the revs. If the headlight brightness fails to change, it's probable that the alternator is not actually charging the battery.

Another reason for the battery being dead is that it has reached the end of its useful life. Batteries normally last for approximately three to five years, depending on their cycle of charging and discharging, and also on maintenance. Doing mainly short journeys, the battery will spend the majority of its time at less than fully charged, and this can have the effect that the battery doesn't last for the same amount of time as one doing long trips and getting charged completely.

Using a multimeter set on voltage measurement it's possible to test the battery's voltage. Attach the red-coloured multimeter test lead to the positive terminal of the battery and then attach the black test lead to the negative terminal of the car battery. When the engine is off, voltage is usually around 12.5-12.8 volts. After starting the engine, at idle speed the voltage should be around 13.6-14.3 volts. If the voltage fails to increase, it could mean that the alternator is faulty.

Starting problems can also occur as a result of loose battery terminal connections. Make sure that the connectors are tightly attached to the battery's terminals. Another reason for starting issues is corrosion getting between the battery connectors and the battery terminals. If corroded, they will have to be removed and cleaned (Make sure the engine is off before disconnecting the battery connections).

It will mean that the battery shouldn't go dead just when you need to rely on it. Car battery maintenance is not complicated and doesn't have to take a lot of your time. It is true to say that when it comes to car battery maintenance, a small amount of effort can go a long way. Be sure to wear appropriate protective equipment such as goggles and protective gloves when you are working with the car battery. The acid which is inside the battery, if splashed onto skin or eyes, can cause serious burns. You should avoid smoking or any naked flames and anything that creates sparking near the battery. This is because the hydrogen gas emitted by the battery could ignite and cause an explosion.

A few tips on car battery care:

* Check the liquid (known as electrolyte) level inside the battery if it isn't the maintenance-free type. If you don't have a maintenance-free sealed type of battery, it will have some removable screw-caps located at the top. You need to unscrew these screw-caps and ensure that the plates which are visible inside the battery are fully covered by electrolyte. Normally the electrolyte needs to be about the same level as the bottom of the screw-caps. You may see a level indicator near the base of screw-cap's hole. The electrolyte needs to be up to this indicator. You should use distilled water if you need to top up the electrolyte.
* Ensure that the bracket which holds the battery in place is sufficiently tight. If the bracket is loose, the battery could potentially become damaged due to excessive movement.
* Test the tightness of the screws or nuts which clamp the positive and negative connections onto the battery terminals. Loose connections could potentially give starting problems.
* If you tend to do mostly short journeys in your car, it's possible that the car battery never becomes fully charged. If this is the case, use a car battery charger now and then to get the car battery back to a full charge.
* If the battery terminals show signs of corrosion, you should disconnect the red and black battery leads and clean the connectors and terminals with a small wire brush. Before you disconnect the leads, be sure that the engine is off, and that any electrical accessories are off. When the connectors are back in place and are tightened, put a little petroleum jelly on the connections to help keep out dampness.

The BCI adjustable load test is a measurement used to determine if your car battery is in good condition or needs immediate replacement. The voltage drop of your car battery is measured when half the car batteries CCA rating is applied to the load. The load should not be applied for over 15 seconds to measure the drop in the voltage. The difference in the temperature plays an important role and the readings might not be accurate. The desired drop in the voltage should be below 9.6V. If your reading is below 9.6V your battery is said to be in good condition.

The battery performance differs as per the atmosphere and the temperature outside. If your battery is heated, let your battery cool itself before you start your engine. And when it is really very cold make sure your battery warms up. The standard temperature for both hot and cold temperatures should be room temperature to accurately measure your battery reading.

When your battery gets discharged completely and you need to recharge it, try not to use the quick charging battery charger. This might use high current to charge your battery quickly but in the end will damage all your sensitive plates and parts inside your battery. Use a suitable car battery charger which might work slowly but effectively, and which will cause no damage to your car battery. The other option you could use is to jump start your car using another fully charged battery and connecting jumper cables to transfer the energy into your dead car battery.

If you do decide to jump start a car using jump leads, make sure the donor car is running. If the car is not running this could flatten the battery on the donor vehicle and then that car will not start either. Safety considerations should also be applied when connecting the leads. Connect the red leads to the positive sides and the black cables to the negative sides and always make sure the cables do not touch each other.

Today's automobiles are sophisticated machines with GPS navigation, LCD screens, DVD players and iPods. However, all of these 21st century technological wonders are still at the mercy of the car battery and the automobiles electrical system. Car batteries have improved over the years but the technology is basically the same. Most of us do not even think of our car battery until our reliable car refuses to start and we are stranded in a parking lot. A modern car battery tester can evaluate trouble with your automotive battery and determine the correct course of action a technician needs to take.

Car battery testers use the BCI adjustable load test as a measurement to decide if your car's battery is usable or needs to be replaced. The car battery tester measures the voltage drop when an applied load that is ½ the car battery's CCA rating is used. The load is applied for at least 15 seconds and the voltage drop is measured. The voltage should not drop below 9.6 volts for the battery to be considered good. (Also the ambient temperature should be around 70° F) For example, you have a battery with Cold Cranking Amp rating of 600 CCA. You would apply a load of 300 amps for 15 seconds. If the measured voltage does go below 9.6 volts, the battery is still good. It is possible to use a car battery tester in differing temperature conditions, but you must compensate for the difference in your calculations.

If the car battery has been completely discharged, you will have to recharge it using a suitable car battery charger. Do not attempt to use a quick charger type battery charger if yours is in this condition. These types of automotive battery chargers use a high current to get you fast results. This high current can damage the sensitive plates in your battery when it is in a fully discharged state. Another method to avoid is just to get a pair of jumper cables and jump start the dead car and then let the alternator recharge it. Your car's alternator is not a car battery charger and it cannot recharge a totally discharged battery without getting damaged.

Be sure to let the battery cool down to room temperature. People often forget how hot it gets inside of an engine compartment, especially in the summer months. That goes for cold weather as well. You may have to let the battery warm up to room temperature. Batteries perform differently at temperature extremes and that's why its important to use room temperature as the standard to accurately measure them.

However, when the battery has lost its charge, it will leave you stranded with a vehicle that is unable to be started. Periodically testing your battery can help you avoid potential trouble down the road and give you warning when your battery is starting to lose or is not able to hold a charge.

Battery technology has made advancements over the years, in terms of power, longevity and durability. In today's vehicles, the battery not only provides the spark needed to start and engine and power the radio, but it also supplies the power for iPods, DVD players, GPS navigation devices and any other modern electronic component that accompanies you on your travels.

Vehicle battery testers are a way to judge weather your car's battery is fit for use or needs to be replaced. It measures the drop in voltage when an applied load that is half the battery's CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) rating is used. The load is given for around 15 seconds before the drop in voltage is measured. A battery in good condition will not drop below 9.6 volts. Vehicle battery testers should be used in temperatures around 70º for more precise readings. Before testing or charging your car battery, make sure the engine compartment has cooled off to avoid burning yourself. Conversely, in the winter months, you may need to warm up your engine to get a proper reading or ideal results.

If your car battery has completely lost its charge, you can recharge it using a car battery charger. This method is recommended over using jumper cables to jump-start your vehicle. 1) First, remove the battery cables from the terminal posts. Remember to remove the (-) negative cable first. (This cable is usually black) and then the (+) positive cable. Don’t forget that all your stereo settings will probably be lost when the power is cut off.

2) Now you are ready to hook up the car battery charger to your car. But first, read the owner’s manual and insure that the model charger you are using is suitable for your car. Now, hook the (+) positive cable (red) to the positive terminal and then the (-) negative cable (black) to the negative terminal.

If water levels in a car battery drop it means that the concentration of sulfuric acid will rise making it harder for crystals to dissolve back into the liquid and therefore harder for the battery to hold charge. If the water levels are correct then the only way of returning charge to normal levels will be by taking they battery out of the car and giving it a slow (preferably overnight) charge with a trickle charger. If topping up water levels and deep charging the battery does not led to a return in charge levels then it unfortunately means that the lead plates within have been damaged beyond repair.

As mentioned earlier if you know that you aren't going to be using your car for a period of more than a month it's a good idea to get out your car battery charger and top up the charge on your battery. The reason why this is important is that anything other than full charge means that there are lead sulfate crystals on the lead plates inside your battery, leaving these here for a long period of time will strengthen the bond and eventually it will become unbreakable meaning your car battery will never be able to hold full charge again.

The heart of any electric car conversion is the batteries. Without the batteries your car or truck isn't going to go anywhere.

It's important to find the right kind of batteries though. You are going to need a type of battery called a deep cycle battery. What this means is that the battery is designed to be discharged almost completely and it will continue to hold charge when you recharge it. If you don't get this type of battery then after the first couple of charges with your electric car the batteries are going to stop working. So make sure you get 12 volt deep cycle batteries.

There are several sources where you can find these batteries for free. One of them is your local golf course. I used to work at a golf course while I was a teenager and every year or two we would swap the batteries out of the golf carts and replace them with new ones. The old batteries were still good, they were just replaced for routine maintenance. When I was doing my electric car conversion I went around to the local golf courses and managed to pick up 20 or so 12 volt deep cycle batteries. They still have years of life left in them, and if one breaks I have a couple of replacements.

Another source of free batteries are fork lift batteries. These are usually swapped out every five years or so. If you ask around the warehousing district of your nearest city you should be able to find a couple of them. These batteries are great and they are designed to last at least 20 years.

The problem with forklift batteries is that they are quite a bit more bulkier than conventional 12 volt batteries so you will not be able to fit as many in... or you may not be able to fit them in at all. In order to use forklift batteries you'll need to use quite a large car or you could clear out your trunk and mount them there.

There you have it, what type of batteries you will need to make your electric car conversion. I recommend that you measure the dimensions inside the hood and the trunk so that you know whether you'll be able to use forklift batteries or whether you have to use regular golf cart batteries. Both types are quite good, but fork lift batteries can store more energy.

First of all I don’t recommend jumping cables to the motorist, second the best options are to use a booster or just call (an expert mobile service) or take the vehicle to an expert shop. If the battery is older than 3 years or so, it could be bad.
If you must use jumper cables then here I will show the right way to do it.

First some information about batteries.
I repair many vehicles with bad batteries. The reasons the battery went bad can be many, so after jumping a vehicle you should seek professional help. Why a battery goes bad:

• Age.

In an emergency when a battery is dead, the first thing that comes to mind usually is to "jump" the car. Well I don't recommend this. The best thing will be to call someone to come and check the car or take it to a shop (there's a chance the alternator could be bad, so replacing or boosting the battery may not solve your problem). If you happen to have cables in your car then you have to find another car to boost you. There's a change of connecting the cables wrong if you're not familiar with the process, if this happens you can disable any of the two cars involved for good and incur in more expensive repairs. The best way to do this if you choose to boost the car is with a portable booster. Also some models have a device that will polarize the system automatically. Some can be connected right at the lighter port, but this takes more time because you have to let the booster charge the bad battery for a while, if you try to start the car right away you could blow the inline fuse or burn the cable.

Also after you get your car running, if you disconnect the assistant car and leave the car running to recharge your low battery this will cause serious damage to the alternator. The alternator is not designed to charge batteries that are too low or at zero volts but to keep them charged. The right way to do this is when using a portable booster to leave it connected to the car so the alternator will charge both slowly and not stress it self. The alternator has the ability to sense the battery state of charge and also the system voltage demand. It will charge accordingly. If the battery is very low it will charge continuously, hence straining it self and overheating. After 30 minutes or so you can then disconnect the booster and keep driving the car for some more time to charge the battery fully. Better yet just drive the car to the nearest service place or call a mobile service when you get home. If you're driving at night or your vehicle has day driving lights this will take a little longer. Of course after having any problem with a low battery and getting the car running, the intelligent thing to do is get your favorite tech to check you system completely to have peace of mind.

Well there are different reasons, the battery could be defective (very rare), or there's an intermittent problem with the charging system or a device that is putting a small drain after you turn the car off. New cars have many computers and they use a small amount of energy after the car is turned off, but it is a very small amount and it should not drain the battery in less than 3 months approximately. If it does is because one of the computers could be staying awake too long or has an intermittent short. The right way to jump-start a car. This is the way I recommend to perform a battery jump with cables. I am a professional mechanic with 28 years of experience. Inspect the battery for signs of damage. Set the emergency brake on both cars and turn off both ignitions and any other accessories other than the flasher as mentioned. Battery terminals should be free of dirt and or corrosion. Make sure both cars are of the same voltage and polarity. Some cars are grounded at the positive instead of the negative although rare. Most cars in the road have 12 volts batteries. With the advent of hybrid vehicles I will strongly recommend you just calling an expert. Hybrid cars have very high voltage batteries. 12 volts batteries won’t harm you even if you touch both terminals but hybrid use much higher voltage. Also avoid connecting the cables backwards; very bad things can happen if you do.

Do not allow battery fluid to touch you, your clothes or the paint job.
(Use a flashlight etc to inspect, not a lighter). Be very careful not to touch any moving part of the engine like belts, fans, etc while performing the procedure either with the cables or your clothes or jewelry etc. Now the cable part, (see illustration at the end of article) before you connect any of the terminals make sure they are not touching each other to avoid any sparks. Batteries give off very explosive gasses that can kill you if they ignite. Also if the cables get hot be aware that they could be too thin or the engine could be dragging for some reason. Also may be you have cranked the car too long. If anything like dome lights come on after the cables are connected, the cables are connected correctly. The first terminal to be connected as recommended is the positive one in the donor’s car then at the disabled car (both at the battery if possible). Then you connect the negative cable at the battery terminal of the donor’s car and make sure you can access the engine at the disabled car to connect the cable there. When the cars finally starts, keep at least the headlamps on to aid in keeping any voltage spikes from damaging the delicate circuits in the many modules on today’s cars. (+) Is the positive terminal (usually red). (-) This cable goes to the car chassis and the engine block from the battery. Disconnecting sequence is the reversal of the connecting sequence Smoking is not recommended any time you are working near cars.
Never hook up batteries in a series circuit way, you will get twice the voltage and blow many things including computers. Some cars with antitheft systems will activate it whenever the battery is low or disconnected. Again read the owners manual for info on this and how to reset them.

Every manufacturer use different systems.
When jumping a car you have to first charge the battery with the “donor” car for at least 5 minutes or more if possible, then try, with the cables disconnected to start the car. If the car doesn’t crank or cranks slowly then recharge some more with donor car, then with cables connected try to crank the disabled car.

The thicker the cable the better. Cheap cables can overheat and in many cases burn or just don’t work when you use them (cheap construction around the clamps). Never crank a vehicle more than the recommended lapse in the owner’s manual (usually no more than 10 seconds) to avoid damaging the starter. If the car cranks for very long periods with out starting then you could have more serious problems than just electrical ones. Always wait some time before trying again to avoid damaging your starter or damaging the donor’s battery.

If when you connect the last cable at the disabled car you see a lot of sparks make sure there isn’t anything on, or the cables are connected properly (polarity), otherwise some sparks are normal since the disabled car’s battery is probably very low or just dead.

There are some top-of the line cables that feature a foolproof device against connecting them wrong.
Every time the battery goes too low it gets weak. Different from deep cycle batteries on boats or RV’s, car batteries are not designed for this and will after a few discharges just quit altogether A battery won’t get damaged if kept in the concrete floor instead of on top of a piece of wood. Well this indicator is not very accurate for this, since it only measures the state of charge of only one of the battery’s 6 cells. If you are knowledgeable and want to test your charging system with a voltmeter, consider this, some carmakers have systems that will not charge when the battery is found to be full. Alternators are not designed to “charge” batteries (specially newer cars, they are usually weak in this area). Their job is to keep a fully charged battery that way.

When a battery goes down for any reason, the alternator has to work overtime to bring it back to normal. The use of day driving lights is one of the reasons many alternators fail prematurely, the alternator works harder than in a regular system. Never disconnect a running car battery terminal to “test” the charging system. This was done long ago before cars started using computers. Also it can create sparks that could cause an explosion. That is why I recommend charging the bad battery by letting the good car charge the bad one for at least 10 minutes. Then you can disconnect the cables and start the car with out damaging anything. There’s a theory that running two cars with the cables connected can damage the alternators. First, damage to the drive train is possible, (Expensive) especially if done often. Second, as I mentioned before, if the car doesn’t run because the battery is dead, the alternator will work too hard to charge the battery when you get it started. If the problem is the alternator, the car won’t run too far at all because the battery is not getting any charge so it will be depleted very soon. Push start should be done only in extreme emergency situations. Considering the low cost of replacing the battery with a new one and after reading this information I am pretty sure you will decide not to risk performing a jump instead of replacing the battery. The History of Battery Electric Vehicles

Battery Electric Vehicles or BEVs, predated the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles. It was between 1832-1839 that Robert Anderson, a Scottish businessman, invented the first electric carriage and Professor Sibrandus Stratingh from the Netherlands designed the first small-scale electric car which was built by his assistant Christopher Becker in 1835.
The storage battery improved, firstly by Gaston Planté, a French physicist who invented the lead acid cell in 1859 and the first rechargeable battery. Then, in 1881, Camille Faure developed a more efficient and reliable battery which became so successful in the early electric cars. This discovery caused battery electric vehicles to flourish, with France and Great Britain being the first nations to support widespread development of electric vehicles.

Prior to 1900, battery electric vehicles held many speed and distance records, the most notable of which, was the breaking of the 100 km/h (60 mph) speed barrier. It was by Camille Jenatzy on April 29, 1899 in a rocket-shaped vehicle named Jamais Contente (Never Happy) which reached a top speed of 105.88 km/h (65.79 mph).

During the early 20th Century, battery electric vehicles outsold gasoline powered vehicles and were successfully sold as town cars to upper-class customers. The cars were marketed as "suitable vehicles for women drivers". Electric vehicles did not need hand-cranking to start.

One of the downfalls of the battery electric vehicle was the introduction of the electric starter in 1913. Finally, the loss of Edisons direct current electric power transmission system. These four companies collectively control 55% of the global market. Johnson Controls recently signaled its intention to buy Delphi’s global battery business for $212.5 million. Yuasa recently merged with Japan Storage Battery, forming GS Yuasa Corp. Yuasa holds an 8% share of the global lead storage battery market while Japan Storage Battery has a 6% share. Their combined market share of 14% ranks them in third place in the global market.

The flood of imported batteries from tiger economies (such as China, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia) is also posing a serious challenge to European manufacturers. The price of oil is also driving up the cost of polypropylene used in battery manufacture.

Technically speaking, the starter battery market has moved completely to calcium-calcium technology, and the change is now almost complete in the aftermarket, certainly in developed countries. For a commercial vehicle and motorcycle, manufacturers estimate the useful life of a battery is three or four years,
“Due to Europe’s congested cities, a lot of cars are now traveling in stop and go traffic, adding wear on the battery,” added Sperl. Ten years ago, we would have said our battery aftermarket business was seasonal. The power of brands appears to be diminishing in Europe, depending on the target segment. As far as the UK is concerned, that may relate to the fact that all the major battery manufacturers no longer produce batteries in Britain, as Paul Matarewicz, Managing Director for Varta Automotive Batterie, said: “It was driven by people who actually made batteries in the UK. As they have shut down and pulled out, they have been replaced by imported products from the Far East, South Africa and Brazil. These products are coming in without a label on and therefore you get a huge number of no-name products flooding the UK market. In the early 1990s, the UK aftermarket was about 60% branded. Given that lead typically accounts for 40% of manufacturing costs, any severe oscillations in price can have serious consequences. But producers can’t chop and change their strategy every time the price of lead moves. Disconnect the car battery leads
Lift the hood or bonnet of your car and locate the battery. It will have 2 thick wires connected to it, one at the negative end, usually a black wire with a '-' sign on the battery. The battery will have a '+' sign to indicate positive. When you put the new battery on you must make sure that the positive and negative wires are connected to the correct terminals.
Disconnect the negative wire first. Make sure that the wire is well away from the battery then disconnect the positive wire in the same way.

Remove the car battery
